Yoga? Me?

Yoga and I never really went hand in hand, and we’re still not exactly a perfect match. Yet during some mornings or evenings I find myself doing some form of it before I get to work or go to bed.

I’m no expert (probably not even at the novice stage yet), but that doesn’t mean I can’t give it a go. My technique is far from average and I’ve fallen over more times than I can count, yet I still try do 15-20 minutes a few times a week.

Why I tried yoga

I work sitting down, almost all day, every day. It’s a horrible position to be in and I’ve felt the full effects of it. Add in the fact that I haven’t exercised consistently in about 18 months and you’ll understand why I still fall over. Balance and flexibility aren’t my strong points right now.

But those few stretches and poses in the morning can really help get the blood flowing and help you stretch out those tight muscles from the previous days’ work. The worst hit parts of my body are always the legs and back, so stretching those out first thing in the morning or last thing before I go to bed just feels great.

If you work at a desk job or you’re not into going to the gym, I strongly suggest you give yoga a try. You don’t need to be flexible to get started, getting there is the point of getting started. You don’t need to go to any classes right away, I still don’t. Just doing a Google search or browsing through Youtube videos will get you what you need.

The meditation that comes with it

The meditation effect that comes with doing yoga doesn’t hurt either. Being able to relax and unwind first thing in the morning or at any time throughout the day helps you to clear your mind. If you have a stressful job or you’re just going through a tough period, this will definitely help. If you have trouble sleeping, give it a go before getting into bed.

Being able to cut off from the world for a few minutes and get away from your constant barrage of thoughts is a good thing. If you’re someone who experiences a lot of anxiety, this is definitely something to try out right away. I know how much it helped me whenever I needed it.
